Fundamental grammatical mistakes or spelling errors are something which makes my blood boil. If this is in a newspaper for example I cannot imagine who has done their proof reading. At times you wonder if no one has. Imagine buying a new novel by your favourite author only to find there are spelling errors, grammatical errors or even factual errors, this is when it is crucial for someone to do the proofreading. I think it is often really useful to ask someone else to do the proof reading of any document you write be it a novel or a research paper. Often you can be too close to the document and you can miss an error, a fresh pair of eyes is often all that is called for. They can look at it afresh and can often spot errors that the writer just cannot spot. I often find that if I print something out, then it is easier to do the proof reading; although I suspect that this varies from person to person.
